The Earth's Crust
The first layer of Earth is the Crust! The Earth's Crust is made up of two parts, Continental Crust and Oceanic Crust. The Earth's Crust is the hard, outer shell which is the surface we are all living on. The Earth's Crust also covers the Mantle! Compared to the other layers of Earth, the Crust is much thinner. The Earth's Crust is solid but not everywhere! Did you know the Earth's surface has 71% of water. That is a ton! The other 29% consists of land, or so it is told. Did you know that the Crust's temperature rises the deeper you go into it? The temperature is pretty cool at the beginning, but as you make your way deeper into it, the temperature can rise to about 400 ºcelsius!
OCEANIC CRUST~
The Oceanic Crust is below the oceans, therefore it is called Oceanic Crust. It is created from very hot and liquid lava, or so we are told. It also cools off quickly! Scientists say that it is thick, (about 4-7 miles so about 6-11 km) although it is not as thick as Continental Crust. It has mostly heavy rocks like Basalt.
CONTINENTAL CRUST~
The Continental Crust has 7 large plates and they are also known as continents! It is much thicker than the Oceanic Crust, (about 19 miles and 30 km thick). The Continental Crust is most likely to be made out of light materials like Granite!
