The Lithosphere
The upper Mantle and crust together are called the Lithosphere.
They are about 80km deep. The Lithosphere is broken up into giant plates as you would find in a puzzle! These giant plates fit around the globe. These puzzle pieces (plates) move a tiny bit each year, as they are sliding on a "so-called" fluid part of the Mantle called the Asthenosphere. The Lithosphere is also slightly elastic. It is flexed when things are places on it or removed from it.The Lithosphere is also
known as the brittle outer layer of the solid Earth.

Asthenosphere
The Asthenosphere is just below the Lithosphere, and it is also
hot which is making it able to become deformed (like clay or silly putty). The asthenosphere is not quite liquid but it does contain
some melted rock there. If you were showing a scale for the asthenosphere to be liquid or solid it would be weighing in moe onto the solid side! The asthenosphere is about 400-700 km deep or 250-435 miles thick!
